Travel Photo of the Day: Kumgangsan, North Korea
Kumgangsan, or “Diamond Mountains”, lies just north of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the buffer zone between North and South Korea. Since 1998 South Koreans, normally refused entry into the country, were allowed to visit Kumgangsan. South Korea suspended tours to Kumgangsan in July 2008 after a South Korean woman was shot dead in the area by KPA soldiers. The North claimed the woman had trespassed into an restricted area and ignored repeated warnings to leave, placing the blame squarely on her. Requests by the South for an investigation into the incident were flatly rejected.
